Hokkaido

Sugatami Pond is a small alpine tarn at about 1,600 m on the shoulder of Mount Asahidake, Hokkaido's highest peak, reached from the top of the Asahidake Ropeway. On calm days it mirrors the steaming, sulphur-streaked slopes of the volcano, and a roughly 1.7 km loop trail (about one hour) circles it past active fumaroles and, in summer, carpets of alpine wildflowers.

Why we picked it

Most visitors ride the ropeway only for the summit view and never walk the full crater-rim loop where the pond and steam vents lie.
