Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6:00 and closes at 18:00 (18:30 in July and August) — an unusually early start for Kyoto, and the reason the stage is worth reaching before the coach parties. The main hall's veranda projects from the hillside on a lattice of keyaki pillars, above a slope of cherry and maple. The temple sits above the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, which are the approach on foot.
