Shinnyo-do is a quiet hillside temple in eastern Kyoto with a three-storey pagoda, a main hall of 1717 and a dry landscape garden, sitting well off the main tourist circuit. Its maples make it one of the city's better-kept autumn secrets, turning in late November.
