Ishibe Koji is a short stone-paved lane in Higashiyama, walled on both sides in plastered stone and lined with ryokan and small restaurants set behind wooden gates. It is free and open at all hours, about 13 minutes' walk from Gion-Shijo Station, and takes roughly 20 minutes to walk and look. It is residential and the buildings are private, so quiet is part of the etiquette here.
Usual hours — confirm with the official site for holidays + seasonal closures.
