Trappistine Convent
トラピスチヌ修道院Hokkaido
Founded in 1898 in the Kamiyunokawa hills east of the city, this was Japan's first contemplative convent for women and remains a working Cistercian (Trappistine) monastery. The cloister itself is closed to the public, but visitors can walk the brick-and-Gothic front garden, small chapel museum and shop selling the nuns' famous madeleines and butter candies.
