Genko-an

源光庵

Kyoto · Kansai

A quiet Soto Zen temple in the northern Takagamine hills known for two contemplative windows onto its maple garden: the round 'Window of Enlightenment' and the square 'Window of Confusion'. Its ceiling is a chi-tenjo, floorboards from Fushimi Castle stained with the blood of samurai who died in the 1600 siege. Best timed for autumn foliage (mid-late Nov).

Why we picked it

It is a bus ride north of the sightseeing core, so it stays calm except for a brief autumn-foliage rush.
