Tofuku-ji Temple

東福寺

Kyoto · Kansai

One of Kyoto's great Zen temples, founded in 1236, known for its vast Sanmon gate and the modernist checkerboard moss-and-stone gardens laid out around the abbot's hall in 1939. From the Tsutenkyo — a wooden bridge-corridor — you look out over a ravine of around 2,000 maples, which blaze crimson and gold in late November.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers focus on more famous spots like Arashiyama and miss the tranquil beauty of Higashiyama during autumn.
