Hokkaido
Motomachi is Hakodate's historic hillside district, where steep cobbled slopes climb from the harbour past the Western-style churches, consulates and merchant houses left from the treaty-port era after Hakodate opened to foreign trade in 1859. The blend of Russian Orthodox, Catholic and Anglican architecture set against the bay makes it one of Hokkaido's most atmospheric neighbourhoods, best explored on foot along its parallel sloping streets.
