Hokkaido
Asahidake is the highest peak in Hokkaido at 2,291m, an active volcano with steaming vents beside the ropeway's upper station and boardwalk trails across the alpine plateau. The area is also known for its hot springs and diverse alpine flora and fauna, making it a natural base for hiking and photography. Its autumn colours arrive earlier than anywhere else in Japan, usually mid-September.
