Takinoue Park

Takinoue Park

芝ざくら滝上公園

Hokkaido

Takinoue Park is a hillside park above the town of Takinoue in the Okhotsk region of northeastern Hokkaido, planted with roughly 100,000 square metres of moss phlox. The planting began in 1957 from a single crate of seedlings brought up to the park entrance and has been extended by the town every year since. The slope turns solid pink from early to late May, when an admission charge and a festival apply, and the Kinsenkyo gorge below the hill colours in October.

Why we picked it

Takinoue has no railway and sits inland from the Okhotsk coast road, so the largest moss-phlox planting in Japan is a deliberate detour rather than a stop.
