Yuushien Garden

由志園

Shimane · Chugoku

Yuushien is a Japanese stroll garden on Daikonshima, a flat island in Lake Nakaumi east of Matsue. Ponds, streams, a teahouse and a covered peony pavilion are laid out across the grounds, and the garden opens every day of the year. Daikonshima is a centre of tree-peony and ginseng cultivation, and the garden's outdoor peony beds flower in spring while its maples colour in late autumn.

Why we picked it

Most visitors to the Matsue area stop at the castle and Adachi Museum and never cross the causeway to Daikonshima, so this garden stays quiet outside its peony weeks.
