Mount Esan

An active stratovolcano at the tip of the Kameda Peninsula east of Hakodate, still venting sulfurous steam from its lava dome. A short hiking trail crosses a barren, otherworldly crater plain within Esan Prefectural Natural Park to reach viewpoints over the Tsugaru Strait. Best timed for may-October for hiking; avoid winter for trail access.
