Mount Misen

弥山

Hiroshima · Chugoku

Mount Misen is the highest peak on Miyajima, and the ropeway does not finish the climb: the cable car ends at Shishiiwa Station, leaving a further 20 to 30 minutes on foot to the summit observatory. The ropeway costs ¥2,000 return or ¥1,100 one way, with the last descent at 4:30 PM, so board the last ascent well before 4:00 PM if you want the top. The mountain itself is free and never closes — three trails climb it, about 1.5 to 2 hours each way — but the ropeway suspends in bad weather and shuts for maintenance twice a year, so check before building a day around it.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on the famous Itsukushima Shrine and overlook the natural beauty and hiking opportunities of Mount Misen.

Stored weekly hours — a different season

Daily 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Admission

  • Ropeway fares: 2,000 yen adult round trip, 1,100 yen one way; 1,000 yen child round trip, 550 yen one way.

Note

  • Day lines describe the Miyajima Ropeway, which is what actually constrains a visit.
  • Upward service runs 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM and downward service runs 9:20 AM – 4:30 PM, so 4:30 PM is the last descent.
  • The mountain itself is free, ungated and open 24 hours — three hiking trails (Momijidani, Daisho-in and Omoto) climb it and can be walked outside ropeway hours.
  • Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours each way on foot.
  • The ropeway does not reach the summit.
  • It ends at Shishiiwa Station, leaving a further 20 to 30 minute walk to the summit observatory, so plan to board the last ascent well before 4:00 PM if you want the top.
  • The 2026 maintenance shutdown ran 22 June to 16 July 2026 and service has resumed; always check miyajima-ropeway.info before building a day around it.
  • Advance reservations are required on peak dates.
