Kongosanmai-in Temple

金剛三昧院

Wakayama · Kansai

A World Heritage temple whose Tahoto (two-storied pagoda), built in 1223 by Hojo Masako to honor Minamoto no Yoritomo, is the oldest surviving structure of its kind on Koyasan and a designated National Treasure. The wooded grounds are also famed for weeping cherry and shakunage blossoms.

Why we picked it

Tucked down a side lane southwest of the main halls, this National Treasure pagoda is bypassed by crowds heading straight for Okunoin and the Garan.
