化野念仏寺

Kyoto · Kansai

A haunting temple in Sagano where about 8,000 weathered stone Buddhas and pagodas, collected around 1903 from an ancient open-air burial ground, stand crowded together to memorialize the forgotten dead. During the Sento Kuyo ceremony on the evenings of 23-24 August, roughly a thousand of the statues are lit by candlelight.

Why we picked it

Its somber graveyard-of-the-nameless theme and location at the top of Toriimoto keep it off standard Arashiyama routes.
