National Treasure Museum (Kōfuku-ji Kokuhōkan)

国宝館

Nara · Kansai

Kōfuku-ji's purpose-built treasure hall houses one of Japan's most celebrated Buddhist sculptures: the 8th-century Ashura (Asura) statue, a three-faced, six-armed dry-lacquer figure dating to 734. Alongside it are dozens of other National Treasure and Important Cultural Property statues spanning the Tempyō through Kamakura periods, salvaged from halls lost to fire over the temple's 1,300-year history. It functions as a museum rather than a worship hall, so pieces are displayed for close viewing rather than glimpsed from a worship threshold.

Why we picked it

Most visitors photograph the five-story pagoda and Chūkondō from the plaza and never step into the low, modern concrete museum building beside them — it doesn't look like a "temple attraction" from outside, so the Ashura statue inside is missed by anyone who treats Kōfuku-ji as a walk-through rather than a ticketed stop.
