Shimane · Chugoku
Kingen-ji is a small thatched-roof temple at Omaki in the Okuizumo hills, whose grounds hold a ginkgo of about 400 years, 33 metres tall with a trunk five and a half metres round. The tree is a Shimane prefectural natural monument and stands directly beside a flooded paddy, so it appears twice — once upright and once inverted in the water. The temple hall behind it is thatched, which is why the pairing won a prefectural landscape award.
