龍安寺

Kyoto · Kansai

A Rinzai Zen temple in northwest Kyoto, home to Japan's most famous karesansui (dry landscape) rock garden — a 248 sq m rectangle of raked white gravel bordered by an earthen wall, containing 15 rocks in five moss-covered groups arranged so only 14 are ever visible at once from any point on the hojo veranda. UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed 1994 as part of "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto."

Why we picked it

One of Japan's most iconic Zen gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage component — included as a famous, undisputed landmark rather than a hidden alternative.
