Hokkaido
The Hokkaido University Botanic Garden preserves a pocket of original Ishikari plain vegetation in central Sapporo, laid out in 1886 and holding around 4,000 species across lawns, a lilac grove, an alpine rock garden and Meiji-era wooden museum buildings. Walking paths thread the whole site a few minutes from Sapporo Station. The outdoor garden opens only from 29 April to 3 November; through the winter it closes entirely and just the greenhouse operates on shorter hours.
