Hikone Castle

彦根城

Shiga · Kansai

One of only five castles in Japan designated a National Treasure, with its original Edo-period wooden keep (built 1622) intact and overlooking Lake Biwa. Includes the adjoining Genkyuen, a strolling daimyo garden built in 1677.

Why we picked it

Not literally hidden — but it's Shiga's undisputed #1 landmark and the prefecture had zero castle/historic-architecture entries; belongs per the 'famous #1' exception.
