Murinan Garden

無鄰菴

Kyoto · Kansai

Murin-an is a small late-19th-century garden behind a statesman's villa in eastern Kyoto, laid out with a stream-fed pond, a teahouse and open lawns rather than raked gravel. It opens 9:00 AM–6:00 PM and takes about an hour, and it stays quiet when the better-known Kyoto gardens do not.

Why we picked it

Many travelers overlook this garden in favor of more famous sites like the Kinkaku-ji or Arashiyama.
