Hyogo Park of the Oriental Stork

兵庫県立コウノトリの郷公園

Hyogo · Kansai

The Hyogo Park of the Oriental Stork is a prefectural conservation centre and research institute at Shounji in Toyooka, which breeds the oriental stork and releases it back into the surrounding countryside after the species died out in the wild in Japan. Visitors follow an open-air route past the breeding enclosures and the managed paddy wetland the birds feed in, and the adjoining Toyooka City Konotori Bunka-kan holds the exhibition rooms. Entry to the park and the exhibition hall is free.

Why we picked it

One of the few places in Japan where a species brought back from extinction in the wild can be seen both in the aviaries and flying free over the rice fields outside.
