Tonomine Kogen
砥峰高原Hyogo · Kansai
Tonomine Kogen is a 90-hectare highland of open grassland at about 900 metres in northern Hyogo, one of the largest surviving susuki pampas fields in western Japan. A walking circuit of roughly an hour loops the basin from the visitor centre, with no trees to block the view in any direction. The plateau has stood in for open country in several films, including Norwegian Wood and the Taiga drama Gunshi Kanbei. It is kept clear by a controlled burn each spring, and the pampas turns silver-gold through October and November.
