Kawayu Onsen (Hokkaido)

川湯温泉

Hokkaido

A hot-spring resort town in Teshikaga, in the eastern part of Akan-Mashu National Park between Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu. Its strongly acidic sulfur springs (around pH 1.8) are fed by the active volcano Mount Iozan, whose steaming fumaroles lie about an hour's walk away and can be approached on foot, and a naturally hot river runs through the village. The town is also home to the Taiho Sumo Museum, honouring the yokozuna raised nearby.

Why we picked it

Deep in remote eastern Hokkaido, it sees a fraction of the foreign visitors of mainstream onsen like Noboribetsu or Hakone, despite its rare volcanic setting and acidic waters.
