Nanzenji Temple

南禅寺

Kyoto · Kansai

Nanzenji is one of Kyoto’s great Zen temples below the wooded Higashiyama hills. Beyond its towering wooden Sanmon gate and tranquil gardens, its most photographed feature is the Suirokaku — a striking Meiji-era red-brick aqueduct (the bridge-like arches you see) that still carries water across the temple grounds. Especially serene in autumn.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers focus on more famous temples like Kinkaku-ji and Fushimi Inari, overlooking the tranquility of Nanzenji.
