A Tendai-sect mountain temple founded in 966 by the monk Shoku Shonin, one of the largest of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage temples, historically called 'Mount Hiei of the West'. The Maniden Kannon Hall is built on stilts against the cliffside; the wider temple complex served as a filming location for 'The Last Samurai'.
