Hachiman-bori Canal (Omihachiman Old Town)

八幡堀・近江八幡

Shiga · Kansai

A 6km Edo-period moat-canal built in 1585 around the former castle town, lined with white-walled storehouses, willows, and stone bridges; small boat cruises glide through it. A frequent jidaigeki/anime filming backdrop.

Why we picked it

A well-preserved Important Preservation District that gets a fraction of the traffic of Kyoto's canal towns — genuinely under-visited despite the atmosphere. Distinct from La Collina Omihachiman (a confectionery/architecture complex), same town.
