Kosho-ji Temple (Uji)
興聖寺Kyoto · Kansai
The oldest Soto Zen training temple in Japan, founded by Dogen in 1233 and re-established at Uji in the seventeenth century, approached up a long slope beside the Uji River known as the Kotozaka for the sound the water makes against the stones. The main hall keeps a ceiling of blood-stained boards salvaged from Fushimi Castle.
