Chikubushima

竹生島

Shiga · Kansai

A sacred island rising steeply from Lake Biwa, reached only by boat. Stone steps climb past Hogon-ji temple and the ornate Tsukubusuma Shrine, where throwing a "kawarake" clay disc through a lakeside torii is said to grant wishes.

Why it's hidden

It takes a ferry from Nagahama or Hikone to reach, so this ancient island of gods stays quiet despite its history.
