Hokkaido
利尻らーめん味楽 is the original shop of a ramen built entirely around 利尻昆布, the kelp harvested along this island's own coastline and rated among the finest in Japan — the broth is a roasted soy sauce base drawn from that kelp rather than the tonkotsu pork-bone style most visitors expect from Hokkaido ramen. The main store has earned Bib Gourmand recognition in the Michelin Guide Hokkaido special editions of 2012 and 2017, and the shop has since opened branches at the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, in Kutchan near Niseko, and — since 2024 — in Boston. Getting to the original shop means getting to Rishiri Island itself, which one food-writer piece calls 'Japan's hardest ramen shop to reach.'
How to get there
In Kutsugata, on Rishiri Island — about a 10-minute walk from Kutsugata Port. Rishiri itself is reached by ferry from Wakkanai (on the Hokkaido mainland) or Rebun Island; there is no bridge or airport link from the mainland aside from seasonal flights to Rishiri Airport.
