Yaegaki Shrine

八重垣神社

Shimane · Chugoku

A Shinto shrine south of Matsue dedicated to Susanoo and Princess Kushinada-hime, traditionally said to mark the site of Japan's first marriage. Behind the main hall, a wooded grove hides the Mirror Pond, where visitors float a coin on a slip of paper as a matchmaking divination.

Why we picked it

A living 'power spot' shrine tied to romance and old Izumo folklore that most visitors skip on their way to Izumo Taisha — best known for the mirror pond in its grove, where paper fortunes are floated to read one's luck in love.
