詩仙堂

Kyoto · Kansai

A refined hillside retreat in Ichijoji built in 1641 by the poet-scholar and former Tokugawa retainer Ishikawa Jozan, named for portraits of 36 Chinese poets in its studio. Its white-sand and azalea garden is punctuated by the gentle clack of a shishi-odoshi (deer-scarer), one of the oldest surviving examples. Best timed for autumn (late Nov); satsuki azaleas in late May.

Why we picked it

Tucked in the residential Ichijoji foothills below Mt. Hiei, it draws far fewer visitors than the central temples.
