Daigo-ji

醍醐寺

Kyoto · Kansai

Daigo-ji is a large UNESCO-listed Shingon temple complex spread up a wooded hillside in southern Kyoto, centred on a five-storey pagoda of 951 that is the oldest surviving building in the city. The Sanboin garden and the long climb to the upper temple are the main draws. Its cherry trees, planted for Hideyoshi's famous 1598 blossom party, flower in early April.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on more famous temples in Kyoto, overlooking the tranquil beauty of Daigo-ji.
