Takatani-yama is a 490-metre lookout above the Miyoshi Basin, where three rivers converge and the road runs to a car park just below the summit. The basin below fills with cloud on mornings when a temperature inversion forms, producing the 'sea of fog' (kiri no umi) the viewpoint is named for. That happens on autumn and winter mornings and cannot be relied on — the view over the basin is the reason to come at any other time. Best timed for autumn to early spring (Sep-Mar), best at dawn.
