Tenryu-ji Temple
天龍寺Kyoto · Kansai
Tenryu-ji is the head temple of its own Rinzai Zen branch and the highest-ranked of Kyoto's five great Zen temples, founded in 1339 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji. Its Sogenchi garden, laid out by Muso Soseki, survives in its original fourteenth-century form and is the reason the temple carries UNESCO listing — a pond garden that borrows the Arashiyama hills as its backdrop and is best seen from the open front of the abbot's hall. A gate at the back of the grounds opens directly into the bamboo grove.
