Hokkaido
A reservoir lake formed by damming the Otofuke River in the Taisetsuzan foothills near Kamishihoro. In winter, submerged tree stumps rise through the ice crowned with distinctive 'mushroom ice' formations, and the frozen surface hosts smelt (wakasagi) ice-fishing. Best timed for january-February for mushroom ice and ice fishing; autumn for foliage around the reservoir.
Usual hours — confirm with the official site for holidays + seasonal closures.
