Rakan-ji Temple (Gohyaku Rakan)

羅漢寺(五百羅漢)

Shimane · Chugoku

A 1776 temple built into three man-made caves carved into the hillside, housing ~500 individually carved stone rakan (Buddhist arhat) statues, each with a unique face and posture. Built as a 25-year memorial project for miners who died working Iwami Ginzan.

Why it's hidden

Overshadowed by the 'Iwami Ginzan' headline name even though it's a formally listed component of the World Heritage property; most visitors do the mine shaft/townscape walk and skip the caves entirely.
