Eikan-do Temple

永観堂

Kyoto · Kansai

Eikan-do Temple is a hillside temple complex in eastern Kyoto, its halls linked by covered wooden corridors climbing the slope to a pagoda with a view over the city. It holds a unique statue of Amida Buddha said to be the only one in Japan depicted looking back over its shoulder. The temple's roughly 3,000 maples have made it one of Kyoto's most celebrated autumn sites, peaking in late November.
