Tomogashima Island

友ヶ島

Wakayama · Kansai

Tomogashima is an uninhabited island off Kada reached by a 20-minute ferry, where moss-covered Meiji-era army fort ruins and brick tunnels have made it a real-world muse for the world of Studio Ghibli’s Laputa. Walking trails link the batteries, a lighthouse and sea-cliff viewpoints across the small main island of Okinoshima.

Why it's hidden

Overgrown fortress ruins on a car-free island — a half-day adventure almost no foreign visitor reaches. Ferry does not run Wednesdays and thins out in Jan–Feb.
