One of Japan's largest and most-visited castles and one of its first UNESCO World Heritage Sites (1993). First fortified 1333, rebuilt into current form 1601-1609; 83 buildings with an elaborate defensive maze. Nicknamed White Heron Castle; survived WWII bombing intact. Best timed for late Mar-early Apr for cherry blossoms; also autumn foliage.
