祇園の隠れた路地

Kyoto · Kansai

These are free, open-access public lanes around Hanamikoji-dori — there is no gate, ticket or opening time, and the machiya on either side are working teahouses and restaurants rather than exhibits. The interest is the street fabric itself: timber lattice fronts, stone paving and a scale that survives from the Edo entertainment quarter. Photography is restricted on some private side lanes, which are signposted.

Why we picked it

Many visitors stick to the main thoroughfares and miss these charming side streets.
