Man'yo Botanical Garden (Kasuga Taisha)

萬葉植物園

Nara · Kansai

Tucked beside Kasuga Taisha's vermillion halls, this is Japan's oldest man'yo garden, planted in 1932 with around 300 plant species mentioned in the Man'yoshu, Japan's earliest poetry anthology. Its wisteria garden of roughly 200 trees across 20 varieties (blooming mid-April to early May) draws a fraction of the crowds gathered at the shrine's famous lantern-lined approach just outside.

Why we picked it

Most visitors photograph Kasuga Taisha's lanterns and moss and move on without ever buying the separate ticket into this adjoining garden, so its wisteria tunnels and poetry-labeled plantings stay uncrowded even in peak season.
