Sanzen-in was founded in 784 and stands in Ohara, in the hills north of central Kyoto, with a moss garden running between its halls under old cedars. Admission is ¥700 for adults, ¥400 for junior and senior high students and ¥150 for elementary pupils. It opens 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, shortening to 9:00 AM–4:30 PM from 7 December to the end of February.
