Shugakuin Imperial Villa

修学院離宮

Kyoto · Kansai

A 17th-century imperial garden estate built for retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo, comprising three terraced gardens climbing the eastern hills, culminating in a huge artificial pond with borrowed-scenery views over Kyoto. Entry is by advance reservation only through the Imperial Household Agency, with a small number of same-day tickets released each morning.

Why we picked it

Reservation-only imperial property (Imperial Household Agency) — architecturally on par with Katsura Rikyu but far less known; genuinely hidden by its own access friction, near the existing Shisen-do entry.
