Kinkaku-ji

金閣寺

Kyoto · Kansai

The golden pavilion standing today is a 1955 reconstruction: the original was burned down by a novice monk in July 1950, and the rebuild was completed five years later to the original form. Gold leaf covers the upper two floors, which are mirrored in the pond directly below. The temple is open 9:00 to 17:00, and the route through the grounds is one-way, so the pavilion is seen from a fixed set of viewpoints rather than circled freely.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on more popular temples and shrines in Kyoto, overlooking the peaceful experience Kinkaku-ji offers.
