Hokki-ji Temple
法起寺Nara · Kansai
Hokki-ji stands among rice fields outside Ikaruga and holds the oldest three-storey pagoda in Japan, built in 706 and still standing on its original footings. It is part of the same UNESCO listing as Horyu-ji a short walk away but keeps a fraction of the visitors, and the grounds are small enough to see in twenty minutes. The pagoda rising straight out of farmland is the classic view, best from the lane on the approach rather than from inside the wall.
