Hokkaido
A herring baron's mansion of 1897, moved to Cape Takashima above Otaru and kept as a museum of the herring boom: the great beamed hall where crews of a hundred slept and ate, the master's quarters, and the sea below where the shoals once ran. It opens for the season only — the building is unheated and shuts for the winter.
