Gion Shirakawa

Gion Shirakawa is a short canal-side lane in Kyoto's Gion, lined with wooden machiya whose backs overhang the Shirakawa stream and planted with cherry trees that draw heavy crowds in early April. It is free and open at all hours, six minutes' walk from Gion-Shijo Station. It remains a working entertainment district, and the teahouses along it are private.
