Nishiyama Crater Walking Trail

西山火口散策路

Hokkaido

A wooden boardwalk winds through craters born in Mount Usu's 2000 eruption, past still-steaming vents, a flooded crater lake and roads and buildings left buckled and abandoned exactly as the eruption left them. It is part of the Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark.

Why it's hidden

Overshadowed by the Usuzan ropeway and Showa-Shinzan, this free ground-level trail is quiet and often walked in near solitude.
