Iwato Ochiba Shrine

Iwato Ochiba Shrine

岩戸落葉神社

Kyoto · Kansai

Iwato Ochiba is a small unstaffed shrine in the Ono district of Kyoto's northern hills, one of the three mountain villages north of the city and recorded in the tenth-century Engishiki register. Four large ginkgo trees stand over its precinct. When they drop, the gravel and moss disappear under a solid yellow layer, which is what the shrine is known for.

Why it's hidden

An hour out of central Kyoto on a JR bus, with no staff, no tickets and no coach park — the opposite of the city's ginkgo-season crowds.
